As you can see, I’ve changed the name of my Substack blog from Trad Dad to The Intentional Man.
My reasons are simple:
Negative connotations surrounding the “trad” name
In some circles, the “trad” moniker has a negative connotation. It can bring up the image of a dominating and abusive father and husband. Since this goes counter to who I am as a dad to my four sons and as a lover of my wife of 45 years, I felt it was wise to change the name so as to take away any obstacles some may have to subscribing, opening and/or reading what I have to say.
The new name encompasses more completely the topics I may want to cover.
Changing the name will also broaden the topics I want to write about to include more than just family-related matters. Intentionality covers a lot more ground and actually plays a critical role if a man (or woman) wants to live a life of significance. Passivity, on the other hand, can lead to a life that slowly fades into insignificance.
For most of my life, I have tried to be intentional in the way I approached every aspect of my life. But there have been failures. To my regret, there have also been periods of passivity. And I have not always succeeded in everything I was intentional about - because sometimes I was intentional about the wrong things.
That’s where these Substack posts come in. Part of growing old is the wisdom that comes along with it - usually by looking back at mistakes one has made.
For my female readers, I’m sure you noticed the “man” in the title. Yes, I will be posting from a male perspective - that’s what I know best. However, I believe a lot of what I will cover will apply to both genders.
But please note: I will not stop posting about marriage and family
Marriage and family are still the most important areas of life to me — and the area we should be most intentional about. In fact, the family is THE critical building block of society – the basic structure around which godly communities and countries are formed. That means I will continue to share stories and life lessons Deb and I have learned over the years as the topic allows.
I hope you will continue to follow along on my writing adventure. Thank you!
I like the new name! And I'm enjoying your writing, thank you for the stories and insights.
